VANA recent communication about a winding up order
By Bernard on Jul 30, 2010 | In Industry, Rant | 2 feedbacks »
VANA has just released a notice about a winding up order issued against a well known newsagency supplier.
I am not happy with the communication, and I know others are not unhappy with it too.
When I first read it, I thought to myself, this communication does not make sense. How can you say the matter has been resolved and then say "...the matter has been adjourned for 3 weeks whilst negotiations to resolve the matter continue..." Based on this comment, the company still has a dispute with the Victorian State Revenue, and it will be three (3) weeks before we know what the courts will do. I do not call that resolved. Do you?
What was explained to me is that VANA recent communication top part, which reads like an advert for the company is simply a quote from a director of the company, which VANA take no responsibility for even though it looks like they do on the letterhead. The second part is VANA comments. However, this is not clear and many like me who read it will get the wrong impression?
VANA communication then piously ends with a comment that no doubt the company director will keep their clients updated. Based on what is this no doubt? How many of the clients were notified that the matter was still under negotiation? For that matter, how many clients were notified that a wind up order existed in the Supreme Court at all? If not for some newsagents reading Tuesday's legal section of the Age, no-one in the industry would know. Despite tracking of emails send on Thursday, Friday, Saturday etc no-one has shown any malicious behaviour or false information being spread.
Australian newsagencies through their elected bodies are clearly depending on VANA to check out the facts on their behalf. VANA has stated it is doing that yet I am not sure VANA is doing that based on this. I think it is an issue of due diligence.
To their credit, VANA has set up a hotline and if anyone wishes to discuss this further, please contact Oliver/Wayne at VANA on (03) 9482-2911.
Having said all of this, I find myself quite puzzled by this case, how does someone get to owe so much to Victorian State Revenue? All I can think of is payroll tax and that would be less than 5% of Victorian salaries. Clearly, there is something much more in this case. If it is a problem in payroll tax in Victoria, what about other states?
Newspapers fast facts

The newspaper works, which is the propaganda organisation for the newspaper industry in an Australia have put out a short powerpoint presentation about newspapers. It is available here.
I particularly like the comment that a smash hit on Youtube of 6.6 million hits would simply be Tuesday for a newspaper.
With all this doom and gloom about the media, many lose sight that newspapers are a terrific product. Everyday the consumer needs a new version, they take up little space, and you only pay for what you sell after you have been paid.
Have a look and see what you think.
